LIFE IN COCONUT GROVE:
RELATIONS WITH THE SEMINOLE
AND MICCOSUKEE INDIANS
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21st / 9:30 AM to 12 NOON
While spinning through the verdant lanes of the North Grove, we follow the exodus undertaken by southern Indians and their runaway slave allies en route to Florida. See how this wayward group adopted the new home and their perseverance through three vicious wars with the Americans in order to remain in it. Witness the ways Biscayne settlers and Native Americans came to help each other in a region quite unfamiliar to both parties. We then examine the friendships that have developed between the Miccosukee and Seminole and Grove residents.
Coral Gables, the "City Beautiful", "Your Castle in Spain", or "Florida's Master Suburb"... Whatever people chose to call it, this community is a true masterpiece, constructed in the crazy land boom days of the 20s, with uncharacteristic charm and perfection. Come ride the shady streets of the Gables, witnessing the dream of George Merrick, mother Althea, uncle Denman Fink, and a host of other artistic individuals. See where it all started at "Guavonia", better known as the charming 'Merrick House'. Continue down to splendid Venetian Pool, looking back to the days of synchronized swimming, alligator wrestling shows, orchestras, and riotous land sales. The grand Biltmore Hotel, old-world fountains, and even a few unusual 'themed communities' are stops on the tour.
