THE BAHAMIAN VILLAGE:
THE 'WAY SHOWERS' OF COCONUT GROVE
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21st / 9:30-12:00 NOON
PLEASE REGISTER BELOW
Bahamian settlers from Eleuthera Island, Key West, and elsewhere in the West Indies flocked to Coconut Grove beginning in the 1880s, creating a distinctive community. Learn the story of their invaluable influence on agriculture here in South Florida. As we ride, admire charming homes of Conch, Shotgun, West Indian Vernacular and other architectural styles. Your guide will point out fruit trees and other useful plantlife first brought to these shores by the industrious islanders.
Coral Gables, the "City Beautiful", "Your Castle in Spain", or "Florida's Master Suburb"... Whatever people chose to call it, this community is a true masterpiece, constructed in the crazy land boom days of the 20s, with uncharacteristic charm and perfection. Come ride the shady streets of the Gables, witnessing the dream of George Merrick, mother Althea, uncle Denman Fink, and a host of other artistic individuals. See where it all started at "Guavonia", better known as the charming 'Merrick House'. Continue down to splendid Venetian Pool, looking back to the days of synchronized swimming, alligator wrestling shows, orchestras, and riotous land sales. The grand Biltmore Hotel, old-world fountains, and even a few unusual 'themed communities' are stops on the tour.
