FREE BIKE TOUR:
THE GROVE'S SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE
PART 2: DREAMS OF SELF-DETERMINATION
SATURDAY, JULY 25th / 9:30am to 12 noon
Is Coconut Grove an incorporated town? If not, was it ever an independent community? This Saturday, as the second in a two-part bike tour, discover how an extraordinary set of individuals transformed a small bayside settlement into a charming, intellectual enclave. As we bike the Central and South Grove neighborhoods, see how residents tried to take charge of their own destiny as tremendous growth overwhelmed the region. Hear the account of our beloved Coconut Grove's 1919 incorporation- only to be swallowed up by the City of Miami a mere six years later. Throughout the tour, learn about the continued struggles the determined locals face in the quest to become, once again, a self-governing municipality.
Experience a distinctive, personalized tour of South Beach. Spin down to South Pointe Park, where we encounter brilliant tropical fish, birds and seaside flora, with the gleaming skyscrapers of Miami as your backdrop. Ride through lush, shady Meridian Avenue, viewing charming cottage-style houses and quaint studios. Cruise along Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road and Espanola Way; home to exceptional Art Deco, Miami Moderne and Mediterranean Revival architecture. While cycling streets and beachside paths, discover the district’s thrilling history.

Coral Gables, the "City Beautiful", "Your Castle in Spain", or "Florida's Master Suburb"... Whatever people chose to call it, this community is a true masterpiece, constructed in the crazy land boom days of the 20s, with uncharacteristic charm and perfection. Come ride the shady streets of the Gables, witnessing the dream of George Merrick, mother Althea, uncle Denman Fink, and a host of other artistic individuals. See where it all started at "Guavonia", better known as the charming 'Merrick House'. Continue down to splendid Venetian Pool, looking back to the days of synchronized swimming, alligator wrestling shows, orchestras, and riotous land sales.
